Eye of Aurora: Distance Sled Dog Kennel

winter-landscape-with-wooden-house-under Eye of Aurora Kennels is a mid/long distance sled dog kennel specializing in races and expeditions of 200-500 miles! I run all sledding breeds on my teams and hold sledding ability above all other qualities. I prioritize traditional Arctic sledding breeds, including heritage Alaskan Huskies with a higher concentration of northern breed in them, as well as running purebred Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes and other working traditional sledding breeds such as Chinooks, since my focus is on distance drives. Eurohound mixes, GSPs and purebred Pointers used for sprint racing don’t fit my kennel’s purpose as much. I am also a part of the Seppala Siberian Sleddog Breeding Project, set forth by Lainar of Starlight Siberians and have developed several Seppala lines of my own, with help and additions from Lainar, and Dawn Chorus' Starry.

My dogs are housed in a semi-indoor kennel, a barn style building which opens freely to a large dog yard when their stall doors are open. Kennels are cleaned daily and dogs are given free run time in the yard every afternoon. I keep them in shape with bike-mushing and canicross in the warm months, and make sure they are well conditioned to begin fall training before the winter sledding season!

For my breeding, I keep strictly to healthy and ethical breeding practices, breeding only the litters I need to keep team numbers, or to preserve valuable bloodlines. I prioritize Sledding aptitudes in my breeding choices, and a goal of our kennel’s breeding is to increase the percentage of strong Sledding aptitudes in draught breeds. I generally breed only litters I would intent to keep myself, but if I ever cannot care for a pup I breed, I search diligently to find a good, working, forever home for them, and keep up with their new owner consistently to make sure their life is of the highest quality. Any pup I breed, I treat as my own, whether they stay with me or not. Occasionally I will take on breeding requests for others or specifically to place pups in other kennels, but I like for these to be aligned with my goals of making Sledding more prevalent in the breeds I work with, instead of just propping up other kennels or bloodlines.

I love to work with other breeders to develop a diverse, successful, and happy sled dog team. Hit me up if you like what I do!

"Thistle" is a female Seppala Siberian Sleddog who joined us as a puppy from the kennels of Starry at Dawn Chorus. Starry has some of the strongest Seppala Siberian Sleddog bloodlines out there as a part of the breed initiative, and Thistle is a fantastic representation of her successes. Her parents' mating has been one of the best ever in the breed, and her full sister DwnC Bidoof is the strongest performing Seppala sleddog of all-time, with 5x at Best of Sport in Sledding! Thistle showed leadership quality early on, and within her second season had taken on the primary leader role like no other young prospect I've seen before her. I am thrilled to have her precious bloodline in my kennel, and even more happy to have her heading up my main string racing and expedition teams. We have upcoming litters planned out of Thistle, to be sired by some of the strongest performing Seppala studs at Lainar's Starlight kennels, and will hopefully be able to forge a strong new bloodline from Thistle with an incredible amount of potential!
